Mexico was the home for several ancient civilizations. The
Mayans moved from the Yucatan and built impressive stone pyramids
and invented a calendar. The toltecs were overcome by the Aztecs
who founded Tenochtitlan in 1325 AD, now Mexico City. Hernando
Cortes, Spanish Conquistador, destroyed the Aztec empire from
1519-1521. After 300 years of Spanish rule, the people rebelled
under Fr. Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in 1810 who made effective
independence on September 27, 1821. A republic was declared in
1823. Mexican territory extended north into California and
Texas. In 1836 Texas revolted and after several clashes, the
U.S. - Mexican War ensued in from 1846 to '48. Mexico lost all
land north of the Rio Grande. An Austrian Archduke, Maximilian I,
ruled Mexico from 1864 to '67, with help from French arms.
Pressure from the U.S. forced the French to withdrawal. A new
constitution was established on February 5, 1917, that provided
for social reform. Since then Mexico has established large scale
social labor protection and educational improvements and reforms.
A constitutional amendment requires sharing profits with labor.
Severe inflation and the drop in oil prices, which Mexico has
enormous supplies of, have caused much economic hardship. The
peso was devalued and private banks were nationalized to ensure
economic security and stability. Many thousands died when a
disastrous earthquake struck Mexico City on September 19, 1985.
The U.S. has been critical of Mexico for its failure to stop the
production and transportation of illegal drugs. @
